THE MANIFESTO IS MUTATING!  IT IS TURNING INTO A WIKI THAT CAN BECOME THE HIVE MIND OF ALL COSTUMERS, FINALLY LIVING UP TO IT'S SLOGAN: "COSTUMERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE!" YOU CAN HELP IN THIS PROCESS BY MOVING PAGES TO THE NEW SITE AT THECOSTUMERSMANIFESTO.COM, HELPING TO EDIT THE PAGES THAT ARE THERE ALREADY, AND ADDING YOUR OWN ORIGINAL INPUT.

Dumpsters of Central Alaska, or Where We Find Good Stuff

There are many "transfer sites" in the Fairbanks Area where we find objects for home decoration.  transfer sites are places for rural Alaskans who are not on city garbage collection routes to take garbage.  At most transfer sites there is, in addition to 20-40 general garbage dumpsters MVC-014F.JPG (52813 bytes) , also a reuse area MVC-008F.JPG (58923 bytes) , covered by a metal overhang MVC-013F.JPG (65309 bytes) , where items that people think others can recycle are left.  There are also aluminum recycling bins and bins for garden waste, car batteries, and big dead metal items like car parts, stoves, and bicycle frames

Our favorite transfer sites are located on the periphery of Fairbanks:

The "Farmer's Loop East" site on Old Steese near the East end of Farmer's Loop Rd.MVC-019F.JPG (41364 bytes)

The "Farmer's Loop West" site at the West end of Farmer's Loop Rd. across from Taku Drive, below UAF.MVC-011F.JPG (41300 bytes) MVC-010F.JPG (54543 bytes)

The "Chena Ridge" site on Chena Ridge Road, more or less opposite the Pump House.MVC-005F.JPG (48877 bytes)

There are also two good sites in North Pole, and one small one in Fox.
Fox MVC-022F.JPG (29803 bytes)  MVC-023F.JPG (25209 bytes)   MVC-018F.JPG (39908 bytes)

To find the sites look for a sign like this dumpstericon.jpg (10545 bytes) or this MVC-021F.JPG (17427 bytes) .

MVC-009F.JPG (60373 bytes) Transfer sites are generally open 7 days a week 8am-10pm.

The bulk of good recyclable items are found under the overhang.   Here Auntie Adddville is surveying the spread at the Chena Ridge Station MVC-006F.JPG (72618 bytes) MVC-010F.JPG (62193 bytes)

MVC-012F.JPG (52044 bytes) Scavenging for stuff in the regular garbage dumpsters is not allowed, although regularly done.  This is because people tend to injure themselves through careless diving, and there are often bio hazards in people's home garbage.  For example, we have a smelly dead caribou head here next to Mme. Exxxedrin.  The interesting part about this image is that a few minutes after the photo was taken, someone scavenged the head out of the dumpster and took it home with them.  Even an item as unappealing as this has utility for a home crafter (caribou horn can be used to make knife handles, buttons, etc.)

MVC-020F.JPG (67877 bytes)

Safe diving is demonstrated by Auntie Adddville with the use of a "Claw". Other good accessories include garden gloves, plastic bags, and hooks. MVC-011F.JPG (45136 bytes) MVC-007F.JPG (49237 bytes) MVC-008F.JPG (52938 bytes)

Builder's Bargains ( 760 Old Richardson Highway) also provides a free stuff bin (as if their prices weren't enough of a deal) MVC-007F.JPG (64896 bytes)

And there is Value Village for buying used items at low cost in a clean indoor environment:

MVC-012F.JPG (39062 bytes) MVC-008F.JPG (53155 bytes) MVC-009F.JPG (55106 bytes) MVC-010F.JPG (54033 bytes) MVC-011F.JPG (54414 bytes) Mondays are especially good shopping days because they have a regular $1 tag sale that day each week.
