THE MANIFESTO IS MUTATING!  IT IS TURNING INTO A WIKI THAT CAN BECOME THE HIVE MIND OF ALL COSTUMERS, FINALLY LIVING UP TO IT'S SLOGAN: "COSTUMERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE!" YOU CAN HELP IN THIS PROCESS BY MOVING PAGES TO THE NEW SITE AT THECOSTUMERSMANIFESTO.COM, HELPING TO EDIT THE PAGES THAT ARE THERE ALREADY, AND ADDING YOUR OWN ORIGINAL INPUT.

Costume Design & Construction

Building Your Portfolio Project (10D)

Some students come into this class already having done some costume design and construction work.  Those of you that have, should consider working on this project, where you gather together your past work into a portfolio, and list your experiences in a resume.  This can help you get summer jobs while you are still working on your degree.

The Project: Begin by going to the Free Techie/Designer Resume Template (MS Word.doc). From the Theatre UAF website, this is a great sample resume template for Designers and other Theatre Tech emphasis people, created by Kade Mendelowitz.  Download the file and open it in your word processing program.  Using it as a guide, begin to fill in the form with your own past experiences working on costumes.

Then go to Portfolios and Resumes and read the text.

Look through your stuff for old photos, swatches, drawings, newspaper clippings, etc. related to your past costume work. If you don't have pictures of your costumes, but still have access to the costumes, put them on dress forms or bodies, and photograph them before it is too late.

Go back over your resume and see if there is anything you can add.  When you have a finished resume, upload it to your files section of the eGroup.

Gather together your paper ephemera (photos, clippings, etc) into a portfolio folder or binder, label it, and photograph it.

OR you may also choose to instead scan these images and gather them together on a portfolio web site.

To be a truly diligent student, you would do both.

Post the images of your portfolio to your files section or post a link to your portfolio web site, and then post a notification on the message board that you have a portfolio now and would appreciate feedback from the other students.
