ADVANCED COSTUME DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
Theatre 451 Spring 2003

Office Hours:

I may be found 1-5 M, Tu, Th, F in the Costume Shop, rm 107, with occasional time out when meetings are called. If you need any additional help with this class, I am nearly always around.

Class Time & Place:

Mondays 6-9pm, THR 107 (Costume Shop).

 Purpose:

To learn advanced processes of design and construction for costumes in performance.  This year, the class “theme”, by student request, will primarily be more advanced work in sewing and patterning, including corsets.

Grading:

Grading is based on a system of points given for successful completion of assignments.  (see examples of previous class projects.)  Grading is based on the following table:

     1000-900 pts= A          This comes out to: 100-90%

899-800 pts= B                           89-80%

799-700 pts= C                           79-70%

699-600 pts= D                           69-60%

599-0   pts= F                            59-0%

Substitute Assignments:

Any and all project assignments can be substituted with designs from a real show.  You may choose to re-render an old show you have done without rendering (in which case you will be graded on the rendering, not the show), or you may substitute a SDA, FDA, or mainstage show (or portion of show in the case of large shows) which you actually bring to completion (in which case you will be graded for results as well as renderings).

January 27:

Syllabus, introduction, measuring, and flat pattern exercises.

February 3:

 

DUE: Flat pattern exercises. [50] Bring discardable t-shirt.  Tape everyone to make duct tape “basic” corset pattern.

February 10: 

DUE: Finished paper version of duct tape “basic” corset pattern. [50] Cut, sew and fit muslin (aka “toile”) of corset pattern. 

February 17: 

DUE: In class, finish “basic” corset, due at end of class. [50] Discuss “clubwear” or reenactor design project.     

February 24: 

DUE: At least 3 “clubwear” or reenactor sketches due.  [50]. In class time to make basic fit muslins for class.   

March 3: 

DUE: Muslins must be ready for fittings. [50] Finished sketches for clubwear/reenactor outfit due.  [50]. In class time fitting muslins, and making basic blocks. Explain miniature pattern drafting assignment.

March 10: 

DUE: Basic Block patterns due. [50] Miniature pattern for clubwear/reenactor outfit due.  [50] In class time learning how to use the basic block to make a “fit muslin” for the final. 

March 17: 

Spring Break

March 24:

 

DUE: Fit muslin for the club/reenactor outfit. [50] In class time for fitting. Demo of draping on form.  Play with forms and sheets. Discuss fabrics and ideas for finishing your garment into a final project(s).  Reminder: Get comp tickets to Kartasi.

March 31: 

 

DUE: Bring in materials you have chosen for your final project, and have your fabrics pre shrunk by tonight! Bring along your muslin, and the sketches and renderings.  Cut out major garment pieces of your project in class.  Get sewing instructions from Tara and Lorraine for sewing your projects in preparation for fittings. 

April 7:

 

DUE: Bring in projects prepared for first fittings. [100] (DO NOT TRY TO GO AHEAD OF THINGS AND “FINISH” ANYTHING TILL IT IS FITTED ON YOU AND CHECKED OUT BY TARA OR LORRAINE!) In class time for first fittings. 

April 14:

 

DUE: Bring in any art materials you would like to use, swatches of your fabric, and all sketches and renderings. [50] Food/drink ok too. In class we will go to the drafting loft and work on making “presentation renderings” of your project(s).  Watch Salome’s Last Dance. Reminder: Get comp tickets to Don Juan.

April 21:

 

DUE:  Presentation rendering(s) due [50] Bring in projects prepared for second fittings.  [50] In class fitting and sewing time.

April 28:

 

DUE:  In class rendering night.  Bring art materials, research info, etc, for the show Salome.  [50]

May 5:

 

DUE:  Renderings for Salome. [50] You may also bring projects in for final tweaking and sewing help.

Final Exam Period: 

 

Will be rescheduled (if all consent) to the date of the Drama Banquet, where your Final project(s) is/are due [200].

Book: The Hat Book by Juliet Bawden.

Purpose: To learn advanced processes of research, design, and construction for period and modern clothing for the stage.

Grading: Grading is based on a system of points given for successful completion of assignments. The assignments are due at any time before the final exam period, but no later. Grading is based on the following table:

1000-900 pts= A This comes out to: 100-90%

899-800 pts= B 89-80%

799-700 pts= C 79-70%

699-600 pts= D 69-60%

599-0 pts= F 59-0%

January 27: Introduction and Drawing Practice. Drawing Up-side-down. Replication drawing.

February 3: DUE: Black and White Copy Drawing [30]. Steaming, wiring, re-stitching and re-blocking straw hats.

February 10: DUE: Re-blocked Straw Hat [40]. Design Video night. Bring your favorite costume films and pre-cue them to the scenes you want to show. Analysis of what makes for effective design. Preliminary mucking about with felt.

February 17: DUE: 2-color Copy Drawing [30]. More mucking about with felt. Felt making, stretching, appliqué and sculpture.

February 24: DUE: Felt hat or costume piece [40]. Demonstration of Chamelion, Omnigarment and Blanket Coat. Describe Multiple use costume project. Show Costume Movie bits.

March 3: DUE: Full-Color Copy Drawing [40]. Mucking about with Ribbon. Ribbon roses, ribbon ruching, and ribbon embroidery.

March 10: DUE: Ribbonwork sampler [30]. Demo of draping on form. Play with forms and sheets. Show Dracula type Costume Movie Bits.

March 17: Spring Break

March 24: DUE: Full-Color Copy Drawing [40] & Multiple use costume piece [50](in undyed white or natural fabric). Play with Multiple-use Garments in front of video camera. Demo of dyeing and painting. Muck about painting/dyeing your multiple use garments.

March 31: DUE: Dyed and or painted costume article [30] (may be multi-garment or not as you prefer) bring your text for your performance art piece. Discuss ideas for final performance. Demo of hat braid and hat wire.

April 7: DUE: Dracula Rendering in style of other artist [50]. In-class time to work on wire or braid hats.

April 14: DUE: Braid or wire hat [50]. Tara demonstrates advanced sewing tips. In-class consultations about Performance art-costumes (bring costumes for help).

April 21: DUE: 3 Nutcracker Renderings done in the style of a specific children’s book illustrator [100]. View Nutcracker videos. Engage in head-stretching costume games.

April 28: DUE: Photos/Renderings of Real-world show [200]. If possible bring in costumes. Everybody does show-and-tell on their real shows. Tell each other the real dirt about your triumphs and failures. Engage in group therapy and costumer bonding.

May 5: Final Exam Period: Performance for the Public [240] at 8:00PM!! Invite your friends and relatives. This event will be posted like an Open Stage and so I guarantee we will have an audience. So rehearse! Acts which wow the public will be asked to encore at the 7th Annual Drama Banquet and Orgy.
