Theatre Makeup
(old web page for class I used to teach at UAF). This is NOT A PAGE FOR A CURRENT CLASS.
Instructor: Tara Maginnis, Ph.D. (now retired from UAF)
Teaches the application of theatrical makeup for use on stage. Course covers old age, animal, character, horror, and corrective makeup, as well as beards. Students must supply their own makeup kits (available at the UAF bookstore.)
Dr. Maginnis Gives a quick demonstration of each style of makeup on her own face at the beginning of class. A real, live demo (no tapes) like these examples:

The Instructional Assessment System of Student Opinion Mean Ratings puts this course at an average of 4.49 out of a possible 5 in general evaluation of instruction over a four year period!

Typical Class Schedule:
(Points for assignments are listed in brackets.)
Week 1: Course introduction and syllabus. Description of needed makeup materials.
Week 2: Looking at yourself, highlighting & shadowing your own features [10], Work on assignment due for next Wed.: draw your face.
Week 3: Basic "corrective" makeup [15], Drawing of your face due [15].
Week 4: Middle and old age [15]. Face outline sheet due [5].
Week 5: Middle-aged character
Week 6: Makeup using putty nose
Week 7: Beard [15]. Duelling Lenin/Lennon's Day: Choose from Lenin (Vladimir Iliych Ulanov) and John Lennon in beards. Bring in photo to model beard/makeup.
Week 8: Bruises, cuts and burns: Horror makeup Pt. 1.
Week 9: Animal (See more Animal Makeup Examples)
Week 10: Vampires, Wolf-men and Ghouls (Horror makeup pt. 2)
Week 11: Drag Queens, period Fops and Starlets (Or reverse sex
impersonation)
Week 12: Demonstration of face castings

Final Exam Period: Final project rendering [25], makeup design of your choice [30]. Final makeup morgue due [25].
Fantasy makeup deigns include a Miro Painting (far left) a Picasso (center) and a Chagall (far right).
Materials: Ben Nye or Bob Kelley make-up kit; hand towel; cold cream, baby oil, or makeup remover; bar of soap; container; pencil sharpener.
Grading: Grading is based on a system of points given for successful completion of assignments. The assignments are completed in class and are due on the dates stated. Therefore attendance is a "must." There are 500 points obtainable in the regular assignments and there is no extra credit in this class. Grading is based on the following table:
500-450 pts= A This comes out to: 100-90%
449-400 pts= B 89-80%
399-350 pts= C 79-70%
349-300 pts= D 69-60%
299- 0 pts= F 59-0%
