THE MANIFESTO IS MUTATING!  IT IS TURNING INTO A WIKI THAT CAN BECOME THE HIVE MIND OF ALL COSTUMERS, FINALLY LIVING UP TO IT'S SLOGAN: "COSTUMERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE!" YOU CAN HELP IN THIS PROCESS BY MOVING PAGES TO THE NEW SITE AT THECOSTUMERSMANIFESTO.COM, HELPING TO EDIT THE PAGES THAT ARE THERE ALREADY, AND ADDING YOUR OWN ORIGINAL INPUT.

Where to Get Free Web Space

Once you have made your site you will need a space to put it on a "server" that is connected to the net.  You can get server space sufficient for most sites for free.

  • Your University --- Your college/university may already have server space assigned to your department or to your faculty without having bothered to tell you.  Most colleges will assign space to you merely by request, just contact the Computing Services office on your campus.
  • Your ISP --- If you pay for internet access outside your job you may also be entitled to 5-50MB of server space for making your own page.  Check with your service provider, most do give customers space on request.
  • Free Online Providers --- If your college is in the computing dark ages, and you don't pay for your internet access, you can still find a free server.  There are about 100 companies that offer free web space, and many offer additional free services, mostly in exchange for putting advertising banners on your pages.  The best known of these are  Tripod, theglobe, GeoCities, Angelfire, and X O O M, but there are many other good free providers.  The down side to free servers are pop up windows and other annoyances.  You can also pay for services without these annoyances at a very minimal rate (see banner at top).
