How to Put Your Site Online

Once you have a site made, and server space on which to put it, you need to transfer the files that make up your site to a directory on your server.

  • Upload Wizards --- If you have your space on one of the free server companies like Geocities or Tripod, your server may have an Upload Wizard, which is a simple online form that helps you transfer files from your computer to your server.  These are very easy to use but slow.
  • FTP --- If you are transferring the files that make your site to a server without a Wizard (like your ISP's or College's server) you need to get a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload your files. They are small simple programs that let you copy files from your hard drive or disk to your server's drive.  The best known of these is Winsock FTP, but there are many more, many of which may be downloaded for free from the Internet.
