How to Make a Renaissance Hat

Instructions & patterns for men's and women's Renaissance flat caps worn from c.1525 to c.1585

Step 1. Make a pattern as shown.

Step 2. Cut out 1 crown and two brims in fabric, and one brim in either heavy weight non-woven interfacing, or medium weight woven interfacing.

Step 3. Sew the three brims together at 5/8" away from the outer edge; the interfacing should be on top, and the right sides of the fabric face together.

Step 4. Trim the seam allowance away. Turn the right sides of the fabric outside and press. Pleat or gather the crown into the brim (pins help). Sew crown to brim with a 5/8" seam allowance. (remove the pins!)

Step 5. (optional) Cut a lining from the crown pattern, gather and sew to the inside with a blind stitch. Sew braid, beads, or jewels to the join between brim and crown, trim with a feather and/or a hat brooch.
