Medieval dress of all classes.
Period Costume for Stage & Screen : Patterns for Women's Dress, Medieval-1500
Jean Hunnisett, Kathryn Turner (Illustrator) Worth every
penny of it's hefty price tag, this book is high on scholarship, illustrations, easy to
understand text and diagrams, and is one of the best, most detailed how-to manuals for
costumers ever written. I had been working as a costumer for almost 20 years when I first
saw this book and still, I'd say lots of it's techniques were a revelation. It shows in
essence, how to reproduce costumes in this period in such a way as to make them indistinguishable from originals.

Medieval Costume and Fashion, Herbert Norris. Still the single best book for English costume 1066-1485. A
long out of print classic, heavily geared towards the needs of Shakespeare productions and
people doing English History plays. Norris' books have long been hunted through
antiquarian booksellers by serious costumers, and only recently have been
reprinted in their entirety. Many images from this book can be seen on The
Cotehardie & Houppelande Homepage online. .
Ancient European Costume and Fashion,
Herbert Norris. Covers clothing in Europe prior to 1066. Also
excellent.

Western European Costume 13th to 17th Century; Iris Brooke, William-Alan Landes. Just line drawings and short text, but most useful for a beginning costumer who needs lots of clear pictures of a broad period of clothing. It's a pointless addition for someone who has nearly everything in the way of costume books, but for someone making a library of their first few books it provides lots of good information in an easy to comprehend form for a cheap price.
Handbook of English Mediaeval Costume; C. Willett Cunnington. A classic, with line drawings mainly, but a very good Dover bargain edition with lots of info per dollar.
A History of Costume, Karl Kohler. My all time
favorite bargain, this book has patterns, photos of antique garments, and intelligent
text, all at one of the lowest prices for a costume book on the market. It covers Western
costume from the age of the Bog People to about 1850, with very strong sections on
Renaissance and Late 18th Century dress. The book has B&W versions
of the pictures on Color
plates of original 18th Century costumes from Karl Kohler's Kostumekunde
along with patterns of several of these costumes, plus others in various
eras.
