General Books on Costume History
20,000 Years of Fashion : The History of Costume and Personal
Adornment
, Francois Leon Louis Boucher.
A giant coffee-table style book with more color and B&W
pictures of Western dress packed into it than any other single book. This
book also gets points for it's accuracy and brevity of text, it's use of
less often reproduced source photos, and it's in-depth sections on European
national variations on Western costume. If I were to be stuck on a
desert island trying to do theatre with only one costume history book for
reference, this is the one I'd choose.
The book above was recently updated into this:

What People Wore : 1,800 Illustrations from Ancient Times to the Early Twentieth Century,
Douglas Gorsline, was the first costume book I ever owned. I still
have my original copy with hand crayoned pictures. It later served
me quite well in college for "dating" antique garments. It has
an unusually strong set of illustrations of American "Wild West"
clothing.
The
History of Costume : From Ancient Mesopotamia Through the Twentieth Century,
Blanche Payne, long out of print this classic survey is back, complete with
the appendix of historic patterns in the rear that long made it a staple of
theatre costume studios.
A History of Costume,
Karl Kohler (My all time
favorite bargain, this book has patterns, photos of antique garments, and intelligent
text, all at one of the lowest prices for a costume book on the market. It covers Western
costume from the age of the Bog People to about 1850, with very strong sections on
Renaissance and Late 18th Century dress. )
Historical Encyclopedia of Costumes, Albert Racinet. One of
the greatest collections of costume illustrations ever produced
(c1870-80), the accuracy of detail and subtlety of color make these
secondary source illustrations as reliable as the originals. Covers
clothing in all periods and countries known at the time, with an unusual
level of respect and appreciation of the beauties of traditional dress in
all cultures. To see many illustrations from Racinet, see Plates
from le Costume Historique.
Fashion a La Mode : The Pop-Up History of Costumes and Dresses
British Costume from Earliest Times to 1820
The Evolution of Fashion : Pattern and Cut from 1066 to 1930
The Complete History of Costume & Fashion : From Ancient
Egypt to the Present Day
A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion : Historic and Modern : With over 950 Illustrations
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Costume and Fashion : From 1066 to the Present
The History of Hair : Fashion and Fantasy Down the Ages
Historic Costume in Pictures., Braun and Schneider. Lots of
19th Century detailed B&W plates of costume history from ancient times
to 1850. Very strong in the historic and traditional clothing of
countries that don't often get found in books (Poland, Persia, Russia, etc.)
To see the color versions of these plates go to The
History of Costume online. Because the hand coloring of the
plates was often fanciful or inconsistent, the B&W version is in many
ways preferable.
The Chronicle of Western Fashion : From Ancient Times to the Present Day
Men's Fashion : The Complete Sourcebook
The Art of Dress : Clothes and Society, 1500-1914, Jane Ashelford.
Haute Couture & Pret-A-Porter : Mode 1750-2000
A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion : Historic and Modern : With over 950 Illustrations
Costume and Fashion : A Concise History (World of Art)
, James
Laver. (Laver was the curator of prints at thew V&A Museum from the 1920's-1960's, and
wrote more costume books than any other single individual living or dead. His opinions,
therefore, have been extremely influential, if not always uncontroversial. This late
survey book is a good general book on the history of Western costume, that best serves as
a text book for young persons 14-24 first learning about costumes.)
Eyewitness: Costume Intended for kids, this book has enough
eye-candy photos of museum objects to make it an object of desire for
adults. One cannot see this book and not desire it.
Costume Through the Ages : Over 1400 Illustrations
Fashion Through the Ages : From Overcoats to Petticoats Intended for
children & young adults, has cute illustrations.
A Pictorial History of Costume : Illustrierte Kostumgeschichte = Histoire Illustree Du Costume = Storia Illustrata Del Costume = Historia Ilustrada De
Reprint of historic 19th Century costume book with multilingual captions.
History from Photographs: Clothes and Uniforms Good kid's history
book.
